Happily Single - it is Valentines Day 2020! Sooo, Here are 5 Fun and Fascinating facts about Valentines Day you may or may not know!? The first fact courtesy of triple j radio this week! On This Day:

1. Captain Cook Died in Hawaii.

James Cook (7 November 1728 – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, captain, in the British Royal Navy. He mapped new found land prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the 7 Years' War and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec, which brought him to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This acclaim came at a crucial moment in his career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages.

2. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, like children or parents.

3. The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day.

4. What is the real meaning of Valentine?

Valentine. But as a historian of Christianity, I can tell you that at the root of our modern holiday is a beautiful fiction. St. Valentine was no lover or patron of love. Valentine's Day, in fact, originated as a liturgical feast to celebrate the decapitation of a third-century Christian martyr, or perhaps two.

5. And how sweet (one for the Aquatics Teacher in myself): Teachers receive the most Valentine's Day cards annually, followed by children, mothers, and wives.
