Oxfams Secondhand September

It's #SecondhandSeptember! A quiet but not shy op-shopper I'm getting involved in Oxfam's monthlong call to opt out of buying new and embrace all things thrifted, borrowed, swapped and resold.

Spending the month celebrating secondhand threads. Pre-loved is about clothing longevity in all its forms, from mending our jeans to investigating the meaning of clothes swap post-lockdown. The month revolving around investing in secondhand clothing and making sure that loved clothes last. Here’s 3 reasons to take part in #SecondhandSeptember

1️⃣ The impact of new clothing production is unsustainable for our planet. Oxfam research tells us that buying 1 new white cotton shirt produces around the same emissions as driving a car for 56 kilometers.

2️⃣ Keeping our clothes for longer is a simple and effective way to mitigate our impact. It has been estimated that by extending the life of a garment by just 9 months, we reduce its water, waste and carbon footprints by around 20% each. #LovedClothesLast

3️⃣ It’s up to us to take responsibility for the waste we create. Though getting rid of our clothes is often framed as ‘charitable’, Oxfam estimates that 70% of all donated clothes end up in Africa, which is harmful to local industry. We can help out by only buying what we’ll treasure, caring for our clothes, and make sure that clothing we do donate is in ready-to-wear condition.

Every little contribution we make and take for our planet matters.👑✌
